From Cowboy to Space Cowboy
Newcomer science teacher Mr. Goodgame is not exactly a space cowboy, but he knows an awful lot about space…and engineering and chemistry and biology and earth science and, and, and... Mr. Goodgame is also the driving force behind this year’s successful science fair!
Mr. Goodgame came to us from San Jon, New Mexico where he taught for 12 years. He is an old hand at science fairs and Science Bowls and his students have competed in engineering, robotics, environmental projects and in a wide range of other disciplines. He has had students win competitions at the national level and has had students compete at the international level against some of the brightest minds from around the world. Mr. Goodgame is interested in inquiry-based research and would like to expand the engineering and science competition efforts at NHCS.
What does Mr. Goodgame like to do in his free time? These days he and his wife are enjoying exploring Boston and taking advantage of some of the many exciting opportunities the city has to offer. He also appreciates the lack of tornados in Boston, as he used to live on the edge of Tornado Alley. Mr. Goodgame is also not above riding a horse across the desert wilds: for 15 years he worked as a cowboy and as a rancher in New Mexico and Arizona, and in the northern states in Mexico and in Montana, where he broke horses to be ridden. Mr. Goodgame will probably not be breaking any horses this summer, but since he purportedly likes fishing he can take advantage of some of the good fishing Massachusetts boasts.
Mr. Goodgame also likes NHCS very much. He says that the teachers here are friendly and energetic and that the students are bright and curious and can go a long way. His message to students is: “hard work pays off” and “you can compete if you put the work in!” For those middle school students who are interested in seeing where science can take them, Mr. Goodgame has started a club called Science Geeks. Remember, it’s not un-cool to be a geek anymore: Bill Gates is an über geek. |
